Career Pathways at Dulaney HS

Introduction to Dulaney High School's Career Pathways
Connecting Dulaney students' education to their future.

Organizations today are going through unprecedented change in response to increasing technology, ever-expanding information, and significant demographic change. One result is clear: the worker in this new environment will need to possess a high level of academic and technical skills different from those of previous generations. A rigorous academic program with high expectations for student achievement will continue to be the cornerstone of Dulaney HS. In addition, students must be provided with appropriate experiences that will enable them to connect their knowledge and skills to their career aspirations and a real-world context

Career Pathways at Dulaney HS:
Builds on Dulaney's high standards of academic excellence and rigor.
Helps students identify their career interests and academic strengths.
Encourages students to select electives and activities based on their interests and aptitudes.
Allows for students' changing interests and developing abilities.
Offers real-life experiences through internships, other programs affiliated with partnering academic institutions and employers, and school-based programs.

Based on their interests and aptitudes, students will choose among five pathways, each representing a cluster of career options:
  School of Business Technology
  School of Engineering & Technology
  School of Health A Biosciences
  School of Liberal Arts
School of Communication & Fine Arts

Students will complete State of Maryland graduation requirements. In addition, each school has a design team that has identified course electives, related activities and career opportunities. Students will complete a minimum of four credits of pathway electives and participate in one related activity. Related activities are listed for each pathway; in addition, some clubs. e.g. Key Club, National Honor Society, would be applicable to all pathways.

Contemplating My Pathway Choices
Career Pathways: an opportunity to invest in yourself.

What does the pathways program provide for me?
This is an opportunity for you to design an education plan that focuses your efforts toward your preferred future - it's your choice.

What pathway is best for me?
There is no right or wrong answer, no good or bad choice - it's about what's best for you. Selection of a pathway is not a life-long commitment to a specific career; rather it is an opportunity to explore your interests and skills, to explore career options, and to begin to identify fruitful possibilities for your life work during your four years at Dulaney HS.

What should I consider when contemplating my "school" choice?

Interests
  Aptitudes (grades, testing)
Results from interest/aptitude inventories (i.e.. Harrington O'Shea, ASVAB)
Information/advice from parents, family, teachers, counselors
  Work experiences

What are the minimum expectations for each student during his/her four years at Dulaney HS?

Choose a "school"
Complete four credits in the "school" of your choice
Participate in at least one related activity in the pathway (e.g., club, job shadowing, internship)

May I change my pathway?
Based on your experiences, if you find that your interests or vision of the future has changed, you are encouraged to change pathways. The purpose of the program is not to lock you in, but rather to provide opportunity and tools to develop a vision of your future, and then to make choices based on that vision. When making the decision to change pathways, note that many courses are "crossovers" and are applicable to more than one pathway (e.g., world language, computer science, statistics, technical writing).

Who do I see if I have questions?
If you have questions regarding a particular pathway (e.g. Health and Biosciences, Business Technology) see any of the staff members listed under the "Faculty Representatives" on each School page. Your guidance counselor could respond to any general question about the pathways program. Ms. Jennifer Pinsky-Newman, located in the Career Connections Office next to room 101, can answer questions regarding job shadowing or internships. Club sponsors can respond to your questions regarding their specific activities. If you do not know the name of the club sponsor, please come to the office so we can direct you to that sponsor.
